Thinking about adding Wonderland to your next cruise vacation? Or maybe you’re wondering…what even is Wonderland? In this episode of Travel Talk, we’re diving into one of the most unique specialty dining experiences at sea — Wonderland on Royal Caribbean. And if you know anything about us, you know we take our vacation food very seriously. Let’s break it down.
What Is Specialty Dining on Royal Caribbean?
Before we talk about Wonderland specifically, let’s clarify what “specialty dining” means. Specialty dining is an optional upgrade available on many cruise lines. On Royal Caribbean, it allows you to elevate your dining experience by purchasing a meal at one of their specialty restaurants.
A few important things to know:
- Most specialty restaurants are open to everyone (though some may be adults-only).
- Some offer lunch and dinner options.
- Pricing can vary depending on sea days versus port days.
- Promotions are common and if you see a better price later, you can cancel and rebook at the lower rate.
We always recommend reserving specialty dining in advance through your cruise planner and keeping an eye on those promotions.
What Is Wonderland?
Wonderland is one of Royal Caribbean’s most creative and immersive dining concepts. The entire restaurant is inspired by the whimsical, upside-down world of Alice in Wonderland and the experience fully embraces that playful, slightly surreal theme. From the decor to the menu to the presentation, everything feels imaginative, unexpected, and just a little bit magical. It’s not just dinner — it’s entertainment.

The Experience Begins with a Blank Menu
When you sit down at Wonderland, your meal starts in a very unexpected way.
You’re handed a menu…that’s completely blank. In order to reveal the items, you’re given a small glass of water and a paintbrush. You “paint” the menu with water to make the words appear. As it dries, the words disappear again. It’s interactive, playful, and immediately sets the tone for what’s to come.
A Whimsical Atmosphere (with Character Visits!)
During the meal, the Mad Hatter walks around the restaurant, greeting guests, telling jokes, and adding to the immersive experience. The entire environment feels fun, theatrical, and completely different from traditional cruise dining. It’s the kind of experience where you’re smiling before the food even arrives.

The Appetizers: Small Bites, Big Creativity
During this visit, we were able to try nearly all of the appetizers, around nine in total plus entrees and desserts (and yes, there were only two of us!). The appetizers are small, bite-sized portions, allowing you to sample a wide variety without feeling overly full.

The Bird’s Nest
The first course was called The Bird’s Nest. It arrived under a smoke-filled dome. When the lid was lifted, two deviled egg halves were revealed, sitting in a fried “nest” of rice noodles. The smoke added flavor and drama to the presentation. The deviled egg included blue cheese and had a very unique flavor profile — definitely different from anything you’d expect from a traditional deviled egg.
Not every element was meant to be the “star” flavor-wise (the rice noodle nest was more of a presentation element), but the creativity and theatrical reveal made it memorable. And that theme of surprise and artistry continued throughout the meal. Watch or listen to the full podcast to get details on every course of our meal.

Variety Over Volume
Even though we tried a large number of appetizers, the portion sizes were intentionally small. It’s more about sampling and experiencing different flavors than having one large plate. You then choose an entrée and finish with dessert, which continues the imaginative theme of the restaurant. The focus here isn’t just on the food itself. It’s on the overall sensory experience.

Who Would Love Wonderland
Wonderland is perfect for cruisers who:
- Love trying new, creative foods.
- Enjoy interactive dining experiences.
- Want something “different” from traditional cruise dining.
- Appreciate presentation and atmosphere just as much as flavor.
It’s not your typical steakhouse or Italian restaurant and that’s exactly the point.

Is Wonderland Worth It?
If you’re looking for a fun, memorable, and completely unique dining experience on your Royal Caribbean cruise, Wonderland is absolutely worth considering.
- It’s playful.
- It’s theatrical.
- It’s unexpected.
- And it makes dinner feel like part of the adventure.
If you’re the type of traveler who loves to say, “That was SO fun,” at the end of a meal, Wonderland might just be for you.
