Don’t miss her #1 recommendation for stress-free planning!
#1 Book a Private Tour
There is so much to see and do and sometimes arranging a private tour is the way to go. You can customize it to your needs and pace. See exactly what you came to see and in some cases it can be cheaper than through the cruise line.

#2 Book Cruise Line Excursions
There are times when it is best to book through the cruise line. This is especially true in ports that involve a tender. Getting tender tickets can add extra stress and may cause you to miss a private excursion group. If you don’t need the expertise of a private guide, then there are some great options through the cruise line. You also never have to worry that you will miss the ship because they will always get you back in time or the ship will wait.

#3 Be Flexible
Cruise ports can change before you travel and even sometimes while onboard due to various conditions. Don’t waste precious vacation time complaining. Make an alternative plan and keep having fun. Enjoy extra time on the ship and maybe extra time in another port. The cruise line will refund any excursions booked through them and provide you with documentation of the skipped port if you need it for an insurance claim.
#4 Tour on your Own
There are also ports that are perfect for touring on your own. You can make a plan using Google maps and saved places. Or you can get some recommendations. There may be great things to see right near the port and it may be preferable to walk around at your leisure.

#5 Take a Food Tour
This is another great option. If there are not historic or cultural sites that interest you, try a food tour. Make sure it meets the needs of your travel party. Is it kid friendly or accommodating allergies or mobility concerns? Are you up for trying new foods? You can plan this on your own or book a tour. If you are looking for a food recommendation, the best people to ask can be your new friends on the ship. Try asking your stateroom attendant, dining room staff, or bartender for a recommendation. They often frequent the same ports and have places they like to go. If you do a tour for the first part of the day, you can also ask the tour guide for some recommendations near the ship.
The most important recommendation is to book with a travel advisor that can help you navigate the excursion options and find the ones that are right for you.
