In this episode of Travel Talk, Allison shares her first-hand experience aboard Star of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest Icon-class ship. From stunning design and smart technology to teen-approved thrills, kid-friendly spaces, and exciting dining options, this ship is packed with surprises. Tune in to hear why Star of the Seas is more than just a cruise — it’s a destination in itself!
First Impressions: Beauty and Design
The first surprise was just how incredibly beautiful the ship is. From the vibrant Central Park area with charming shutters to the bright and colorful Surfside neighborhood, every space is thoughtfully designed. Even the more relaxing areas are alive with green, blue, and jewel tones. Artwork is everywhere — from elevator lobbies to public spaces — adding to the ship’s stunning atmosphere.
Smart Technology Everywhere
One of the standout features is the ship’s innovative technology. The elevators use an advanced call system where you choose your deck before boarding, making movement around the ship smoother for over 7,000 guests. In staterooms, lighting and climate can be adjusted with presets like “Morning,” “Movie,” or “Sleep.” Touchless coffee dispensers, restroom doors, and more make the Star of the Seas feel futuristic while remaining easy to use.

The sailing itself was also impressively smooth — perhaps the calmest I’ve ever experienced leaving Port Canaveral.
Teen-Friendly Fun: Crown’s Edge, Thrill Island, and More
I brought my 16-year-old son along, which gave me the chance to see how teens experience the ship. His verdict? Absolute approval.

- Crown’s Edge – A thrilling ropes course and zipline adventure around the ship’s anchor logo.
- Thrill Island Waterpark – Home to Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six exciting slides.
- Mini Golf & Sports Court – A challenging nine-hole course and a multifunctional sports court for both pickleball and basketball that teens will love.
- Endless Food – From soft-serve ice cream at multiple locations to Windjammer buffets and desserts, there was never a dull bite.

Dining Highlights: Must-Try Eats on Star of the Seas
Food is always an important part of a cruise, and this ship shines with unique options:
- Aquadome Market – Five fresh quick-service venues, including Thai, barbecue and mac & cheese, Mediterranean, and Latin American, plus a creperie open until midnight.
- El Loco Fresh – A complimentary Mexican venue with tacos, nachos, burritos, and a full toppings bar — perfect for lunch.

Of course, Windjammer and Sorrento’s are still favorites, but these additions make dining even more exciting.

Top Wins for Kids Under 12
Younger cruisers are not left out! Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean program provides age-appropriate spaces and activities for kids 3–12.

A new feature on Star of the Seas is the Kid Tracker, a wearable device that helps parents know exactly where their children are onboard — a fantastic peace-of-mind tool for families.
The Surfside Neighborhood is a bright, colorful space just for kids and families, featuring:
- A carousel
- Splash pad and water play area
- Dry slide into the neighborhood
- Kid-friendly dining options

This ensures younger children have their own dedicated space, separate from the teen-oriented Thrill Island.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Icon-Class Ships
Currently, Star of the Seas sails seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries out of Port Canaveral. Another Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, is coming soon, and Royal Caribbean plans to expand this class to Galveston and beyond. With five total ships planned, the Icon class is here to stay.
While each ship is spectacular, Star of the Seas holds a special place in my heart after this unforgettable preview.

Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas is more than just the world’s largest cruise ship — it’s a vacation destination in itself. From innovative technology and delicious dining to family-friendly neighborhoods and teen-approved thrills, this ship sets a new standard at sea.
